Open Water

Water lying beyond the limits of swamp or emergent vegetation, although it may contain submerged or floating vegetation. It includes all water bodies from farm ponds to lakes and reservoirs.

Associated notable species
Birds Kingfisher, redshank.
Amphibians and Reptiles Great-crested Newt, palmate newt, grass snake.
Dragonflies Emperor, migrant hawker, ruddy darter, red-eyed damselfly, focal dragonflies.
Invertebrates White-clawed crayfish, two nationally notable snails, seven nationally notable beetles, two nationally notable flies.
Mammals Otter, water shrew, water vole, various bats.
Plants Floating water plantain, mare’s-tail, mudwort, spiked water-milfoil, water purslane, grass wrack pondweed.
