Picture of window glass excavated from Hulton Abbey, 1983

Medieval window glass excavated from Hulton Abbey, 1983

Glass was comparatively rare and highly valued in the middle ages. Window glass was confined to high status sites such as monasteries and palaces.

Glass is not as easy to date as other materials such as pottery. Details of a vessel shape and colour, together with its process of manufacture can be studied in detail to date finds.
