To prevent delays in the planning process each county keeps their own, up to date, SMR (Sites and Monuments Record). The Local Planning Authority's Archaeologist is in charge of maintaining the records and advises on new planning applications.

The LPA Archaeologist's involvement could also include arranging excavations and watching briefs to ensure sites are properly maintained.
