Archaeology is the study of past people through the material they left behind. It is the archaeologist's job to excavate and interpret this evidence.

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is privileged to have its own Field Archaeology Unit attached to the Museum which is dedicated to the preservation and recording of our heritage.

Archaeological sites are limited and precious.
Excavation of a site necessarily causes its destruction so it is vital that proper records are kept of the material which is uncovered.
