Madeley
Colliery was operational between 1880 and 1957
and at the height of its production outputted
over 186,000 tons of coal with approximately 840
men. The main shaft was known as the 'Fair
Lady' and prior to nationalisation the
site was managed by the Montague Higginson Group
which was a group of local coal merchants. The
presence of the colliery (with its production of
fuel) lead to clay, brick and tiles factories
and iron works opening in the Madeley Heath
area.
Madeley
was a colliery afflicted by a number of mining
disasters in the 19th century. Explosions in
1871, 1879 and 1880 killed nearly 150 people in
total.
