In 1906 the
company moved into coke production (coke is
produced by heating coal to remove impurities
and was
needed to produce high quality steel) by setting
up the Coking Company Ltd. This company bought
up Florence,
Silverdale, Talke and
Holditch
collieries in order to produce enough coke.
The decline of steel manufacture at Shelton Bar
really began after the First World War
when the owners of the company were forced
to sell much of it due to financial
difficulties. In 1922 wrought iron production
ceased but steel manufacture continued to expand
and the company provided steel for making shells
during the Second World War. Investment in
the 1960s modernised steel production at the
plant but the decline continued and the
manufacture of steel ceased in 1978.
