Reconstruction
of one of the Medieval ovens excavated at
Sneyd Green
Kilns
now used coal instead of wood as their fuel
and the result was the development of multi-flued
kilns. As coal takes time to heat up, several
fire mouths were needed
to ensure the pots reached their correct
firing temperature. Few actual superstructures
survive, as they would have been of a
temporary build and erected for each firing.
However, the bases
of some of these kilns have survived but they are few and far between. This period
also saw the first use of specific wares being
made for the soul purpose of housing vessels during firing.
