Fenton war memorial

This war memorial is situated in Albert Square, Fenton, outside the Town Hall. The monument was constructed between 1918 and 1924 and was later altered to commemorate both the First and Second World Wars. It is a four sided obelisk made from Portland stone with Bronze and enamel plaques on all four sides of the base. The west side shows a figure of a soldier above a plaque which reads: '1914-1918 - 1938-1945'. There is also a festooned wreath above a plaque reading 'Honour'. The south side shows a wreath above a plaque reading: 'Sacrifice'. The north side shows a wreath above a plaque reading: 'Courage'. On the east side of the obelisk is the Fenton coat of arms carved in stone above a plaque reading: 'Erected by voluntary subscriptions in memory of the Fenton men who gave their lives in the Great War and whose names are recorded on a tablet in the Town Hall.' This monument was erected after the First World War, but only one of the plaques dates from then.
