| There
are several panels inside Longton Cenotaph
listing the names of local people who have
died during wars and conflicts. This medallion
is placed above each panel of names and is
based on an original design circa 1918. The
original plaques were given to the next of kin
of those who died on war service, with the
name of the person being commemorated
inscribed inside the frame on the right of the
plaque. These war
plaques were referred to as 'The Widow's
Penny'. It bears the inscription:
'He
died for freedom and honour'
