Poppies at Wolstanton war memorial

Every year on Remembrance Day, the second Sunday in November, war memorials around the country are the focus of ceremonies at which people lay wreaths of poppies in honour of the soldiers who gave their lives. A two minute silence is held at 11am in memory of the millions who have died in war.

People also wear a poppy to show that they are remembering those who died for their country. Poppies are worn because it is the flower that grew on the battle fields after the end of the First World War. The sale of the poppies raises money for the old soldiers who are still alive.
