Metamorphic rock key 

The fact that your specimen has crystals separated into distinct bands, or has white sugary crystals, suggests it may be a metamorphic rock. Metamorphic rocks form when other rocks are deeply buried during mountain building or when tectonic plates collide: the massive heat and pressure causes the rocks to 'melt' and recrystallise, sometimes with the minerals in bands.
