Metamorphic rock key
The fact
that your specimen has crystals separated into
distinct bands, or has white sugary crystals,
suggests it may be a metamorphic rock.
Metamorphic rocks form when other rocks are
deeply buried during mountain building or when
tectonic plates collide: the massive heat and
pressure causes the rocks to 'melt' and
recrystallise, sometimes with the minerals in
bands. Use the key below to try and identify
your metamorphic rock.
Is the rock a pale colour (often white or cream) with sugary
crystals?
