Mineral key
Your specimen may be a
mineral. Minerals make up rocks and are
sometimes found as pure, separate crystals.
These crystals have distinctive properties
that can help us to identify them: colour,
crystal form (the shape of the crystal),
hardness, lustre and streak (the colour the
mineral leaves when rubbed on an unglazed
piece of pottery).
The key below will help you to identify four
different minerals. Minerals can be quite
tricky to identify, so if you need more help
why not consult the staff at your local museum
or
click here to search the Virtual
Store.
What colour is your mineral?
