Your specimen is probably pumice. Pumice is very
distinctive; it is usually grey (but can have yellow or brown areas), full of
holes and is very light. Pumice forms when frothy lava erupts out of a volcano
and cools very quickly, trapping the air bubbles. Pumice is often found in
volcanic areas of Italy and can sometimes been seen floating in the sea.
