Your specimen is a piece of quartz. Quartz is
usually colourless, white or pink but can be purple (known as amethyst), yellow
(citrine) or green (prase). It is a hard mineral which often forms into
six-sided prisms although these are often imperfect. Quartz is very common and
is present in a wide variety of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It
is found all over the world and is used in glassmaking, ceramic production,
abrasives and the construction industry.
