Is my specimen a rock or a mineral?

The difference between rocks and minerals is that bits of mineral make up rocks, whereas minerals are pure crystals made up of specific types of atom. Minerals sometimes grow into specific crystal shapes whereas rocks are usually just 'blob' shaped. It can be difficult to tell rocks and minerals apart sometimes, so if you can't decide what your specimen is using these keys then take it to a museum to be identified, or use the Virtual Store which features lots of different rocks and minerals.

Does your specimen have a definite shape and look like a crystal?
