Fish scales are quite commonly found in the 300 million year old Carboniferous rocks of Stoke-on-Trent. They can be found as single scales or a collection of scales and often occur in waste produced by coal mining. As shown in the picture above fish scales can take a number of forms and the shape of a scale can often tell us which fish it came from.
