Fish scales are quite commonly found in the 300 million
year old Carboniferous rocks of Stoke-on-Trent. They can be found as single
scales or a collection of scales and often occur in waste produced by coal
mining. As shown in the picture above fish scales can take a number of forms and
the shape of a scale can often tell us which fish it came from.
If you would like to identify the type of fish your scale fossil came from you
could do some research at your local library or could search the Virtual Store
which features a number of fish scale fossils. If you want more help, why not
take your fossil to a local museum to be identified?
