The Potteries
Museum & Art Gallery is an archive for many
thousands of wildlife sighting records that have
been made over the last 200 years. We also act
as a voucher specimen (an actual specimen of the
species spotted) store. The records cover most
parts of Staffordshire and are being entered
into a biological database called Recorder. The
records and database are looked after by the
Staffordshire Ecological Record which maintains
the data, collects new records and supplies
information to local councils and private
organisations in relation to planning
applications and development plans.
The work carried out by the Staffordshire
Ecological Record can be used to monitor
population changes in plants and animals, to
track the movement of a species around the
county and to help protect important biological
and geological sites and habitats.
