The Cromer Road site lies between the Caldon Canal and River Trent in Birches Head and is home to over 190 species of plant including stag's-horn clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum), which is uncommon in this area. A number of wildflower species, such as devil's bit scabious and poppy, occur and attract large numbers of butterflies and moths. The edge of the river is populated by himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) which is a non-native, invasive plant that requires controlling if it is not to push out other plants. The cover and food provided by the wide range of vegetation attracts a variety of small birds including goldfinches and sparrows.
