portrait image of betony

Betony photographed in summer 2001

This site (off Lightwood Road in Lightwood) includes a field boundary that has developed into a wider band of Salix sp. (willow) scrub in the marshy ground around the stream. It also includes a field bank with betony (Betonica officinalis), pignut (Conopodium majus) and field wood-rush (Luzula campestris). The field immediately to the north-west has a similar bank; hawthorn scrub remains, but there is lttle if any betony.

The surrounding fields are predominately species poor semi-improved grassland of diminished conservation value, and are no longer included within the site boundary.
