This
large nature reserve in Smallthorne
encompasses a lake, swamps and reedbeds (of
significant importance hence SSSI status -
large numbers of roosting swallow use the
site), grassland, a tree plantation and small
heathland areas. The site is very popular with
visitors for dog walking and general
recreation.
The grassland houses a wide variety of plant
species including tufted hair-grass, meadow
crane's-bill (uncommon in Staffordshire),
meadow vetchling and common sorrel. Occasional
specimens of meadow foxtail, marsh thistle and
purple loosestrife (another plant uncommon in
the county) can also be found.
The plantation is largely made up of poplar,
rowan and white willow trees with occasional
crack willow and maple. A few ash, field maple
and small-leaved lime (rare in Staffordshire)
are present whilst the ground flora is
dominated by yorkshire-fog grass and cock's
foot. Teasel, which is uncommon in
Staffordshire, can be found in small numbers
in the ground flora.
