The swamp surrounding the lake provides an ideal nesting habitat for many birds and waterfowl abound at the site. The vegetation is dominated by reed sweet-grass and reedmace, with a few yellow iris and hard rush. Amphibious bistort and white water lilies are locally abundant on the surface of the water.
The heathland is comprised of two small acid flushes at the western end of the site. There are a number of characteristic heath species such as tormentil, mat-grass and heath bedstraw.
