From behind, the dipper looks something like a short tailed female blackbird, but should it turn around the white breast instantly gives a correct identification - there is no other British bird quite like it. The habits of the dipper are quite unique too; in search of its largely invertebrate diet it actually submerges itself into the streams and rivers which it inhabits, and once underwater will walk along the river or stream bed in pursuit of prey. In addition to invertebrates such as dragonfly larvae and other insects, the dipper will also take small fish such as minnows and sticklebacks.
