A
winter visitor to Britain,
the fieldfare is a member of the thrush
family. It is quite a striking bird when a clear
view can be gained; blue-grey head and rump,
chestnut wings and back with darker flight
feathers and tail. The breast is a warm golden
colour with a heavy dark pattern, becoming
white on the underside. The sexes are very
similar. Fieldfares are usually seen in
flocks, which are often very large, and
regularly accompanied by another winter
visitor and member of the thrush family - the redwing. In flight fieldfares utter a
distinctive chattering call. Their diet is quite
typical for a thrush consisting of invertebrates such as
earthworms, fruit and seeds.
