Scientific name: Notonecta glauca.

Body length: 14mm.

Swimming around upside-down just under the water surface, the aptly named water boatman uses a specially adapted pair of its legs to 'row' around as it searches for prey, which is often caught in the surface tension of the water, and which the boatman seizes from beneath. Often looks silvery due to a layer of air trapped against its body.

Very common in Staffordshire.
