Scientific name: Forficula auricularia.

Body length: 13mm.

Most active during the night, the earwig is often seen though during the day after being disturbed from its resting place, under a stone for instance. The pincer-like arrangement at its rear makes it instantly recognisable, known as cerci, these are more curved in the male than the female, and are used mainly for defence. The earwig has wings but these are vestigial, and useless for flying.

Very common in Staffordshire.
