Scientific name: Helophilus pendulus.

Body length: 10mm.

Flight period:
April - October.

In common with a number of other hoverflies this one has the yellow and black colouration of a wasp as a defence mechanism. Living in such places as stagnant water the larvae have a telescopic 'snorkel' allowing them to breathe while remaining hidden. The adult is often seen around water, but may be encountered in many habitats.

Very common in Staffordshire.
