Scientific name: Gerris lacustris.

Average body length: 10mm.

A familiar sight on ponds throughout the country, the pond skater is often the first visible occupant of newly created water features. It preys on other insects, which are often trapped by the surface tension of the water. With the approach of winter, pond skaters leave the water to hibernate on land.

Very common in Staffordshire.
