Coal
mining was an important industry in
Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent
throughout the 19th and 20th century, employing
many thousands of local people. The industry
began to decline in the latter half of the
twentieth century and the last colliery in the
area, Silverdale, closed in 1998. With its
closure one of our most important industries,
and an entire way of life for many people, was
lost.

navigation bar, or those below, to find out more
about some of the area's collieries and mining
history.
